Leaves (8)10–16(18) × 1–3(4) cm, 4–13 times as long as broad, narrowly oblanceolate to linear-oblanceolate, often falcate, tapered from the upper half to a very narrow base or often distinctly petiolate, subacute to rounded at the apex, glabrous or in subsp. petiolaris spreading-pubescent on base of lamina or petiole, usually bright red when young.
Middle bracts 1–3 × 1–2(2.3) cm, obtuse to rounded, appressed-pubescent in the lower part but glabrous in the upper part, green to reddish-brown or pink; inner bracts 3.5–6(7) × 0.4–1.2 cm, linear-oblong or broader at the tip, usually exceeding the flowers, usually greenish-cream with a pink tip.
Perianth base glabrous except inside the upper part of its margin; claw glabrous outside, hairy or glabrous inside (see subspecies); limb (10)12–20 mm long, glabrous or covered with sparse ascending hairs when young or with a tuft of dense hairs at the tip.
Usually a tree up to 8 m high with a well developed trunk, rarely a robust shrub to small tree 2–3 m high.
Young branches glabrous to tomentose, the epidermis later flaking off to reveal a brown cortex.
Heads 6–10(12) cm diameter, the bracts not reflexed.
Flowers 3–5(5.5) cm, creamy-white to pink.
Style glabrous.
