Characteristics

Erect, rounded shrub or small tree, 2-4 m in height, with a short, stout, main trunk up to 300 mm in diam. at base; bark smooth, grey. Stems 3-5 mm in diam., shortly velutinous, later glabrescent. Leaves sessile, ascending, oval to obovate, obtuse, occasionally elliptic-acute, or ovate, 35-85 mm long, 20-45 mm wide, shaggy-sericeous, margins thickly fimbriate; indumentum soon sloughing off, but sometimes persisting at leaf base, surface later glabrous, glaucescent. Inflorescences cylindric in bud, 35-60 mm long, 20-25 mm wide, becoming widely obconic on opening, the outer involucral bracts spreading outwards almost at right angles to the style, open inflorescence 60-90 mm in diam. Involucral receptacle flat to concave, 15-20 mm wide. Involucral bracts 4-5 seriate, outer surface adpressed-sericeous, but with glabrous patches along margins and at apices; outer series tightly imbricate, very broadly ovate, acute, 8-10 mm long, 10-12 mm wide; inner series oblong, 25-40 mm long, 10-15 mm wide, widely splayed at anthesis, apices concave, rounded, apical margins occasionally silky-fimbriate. Perianth 35-55 mm long, straight; tube 10 mm long, glabrous proximally, tawny-pilose distally, merging imperceptibly with slender to filiform pilose claws; limbs linear acute, 10-15 mm long, glabrous, apices only rarely crinite. Style straight, slender, 45-50 mm long. Pollen presenter uniformly filiform, 10-15 mm long, straight. Anthers 4, filiform, sessile, 10-15 mm long. Ovary obconic, 2 mm long, covered with 10 mm long straight tawny trichomes. Hypogynous scales 1 mm long, lanceolate, acute. Flowering takes place in late summer and autumn, commencing in December, reaching a peak in March and April, with odd blooms persisting as late as May or June.
