A sprawling shrub, 0.5-1 m tall, up to 3 m in diam., with a single main trunk. Stems glabrous, 5-8 mm in diam., glaucous initially. Leaves glabrous, glaucous, oblanceolate to very broadly obovate, 75-160 mm long, 25-55 mm broad, tapering proximally to a distinct petiolar region of up to 20 mm long, apices acute, sometimes mucronate; ascending to incurved, uppermost leaves enclosing inflorescences. Inflorescences shallowly crateriform, 70-90 mm in diam. Involucral receptacle very prominent, conic-acute, 15-20 mm high, 20-25 mm in diam. Involucral bracts glabrous, 4-5 seriate; outer series tightly imbricate, broadly ovate-acute, 10 mm long, 10 mm wide, margins horny, minutely ciliate; inner series oblong, incurved, 30-45 mm long, 5-15 mm wide, apices rounded, convex and incurved. Perianth 25-30 mm long, strongly adaxially arcuate, glabrous except for sparsely setose limbs; tube dilated, 10 mm long, glabrous; claws slender glabrous; limbs deflected adaxially at an angle to claws, linear acute, very sparsely setose with tawny bristles, apices minutely crinite. Style 30-35 mm long, very strongly adaxially arcuate, ancipitous, tapering terminally. Pollen presenter 10 mm long, linear, scarcely differentiated from style. Ovary obconic, 3 mm long, covered with 20 mm long, straight tawny trichomes. Hypogynous scales ovate, 1 mm long. Midwinter is the peak of the flowering season-from May until July-although a few blooms can be found as late as September.
