Characteristics

A dwarf, multiple-stemmed shrub, 0.3-1 m in height, with a woody subterranean rootstock. Stems erect, usually unbranched, 2-5 mm in diam., glabrous, green or flushed with pink or red. Leaves sessile to subsessile, linear, narrowly oblong or oblanceolate, occasionally slightly falcate, acute to obtuse, 6-12 cm long, 0.7-3 cm wide, glabrous. Inflorescences terminal, solitary, obconic to subglobose, 3-6 cm in diam., opening to broadly cyathiform. Receptacle convex, 10-15 mm in diam. Involucral bracts 4-5 seriate; outer series broadly to very broadly ovate, acute to obtuse, 0.5-1 cm long, 1-1.5 cm wide, glabrous but occasionally sparsely sericeous at base; inner series oblong, concave and rounded at apex, 2.5-3 cm long, 0.5-1 cm wide, glabrous. Perianth straight, 2-4 cm long; tubes glabrous, 4-8 mm long; claws filiform to linear, outer surface glabrous, inner surface pubescent; limbs linear to very narrowly lanceolate, 0.6-2 cm long, glabrous to densely villous, indumentum white or ferruginous. Style 2-4 cm long, straight to slightly adaxially arcuate, laterally compressed. Pollen presenter linear-filiform, 3-10 mm long, scarcely differentiated from style. Ovary obconic, 3 mm long, covered with long, straight, tawny trichomes. Hypogynous scales narrowly ovate, acute, 1 mm long.
