Origin: in Davis, Calif., by M.N. Wood (1883 to 1953), U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, and W.P. Tufts, California Agr. Expt. Sta. Introd. in 1938. Nonpareil × Harriott; cross made in 1926; first crop in 1930; selected in 1932; tested as Calif. 8-32; sibling of Harpareil. Nut: large; roughly elliptical; shell: thin, soft, smooth, attractive light yellow, large, round or oval, shelling out about 60%; pellicle color light, rather thick, tough, smooth; Kernel: large, rather plump, irregular oval or ovate, attractive, nearly smooth; quality high; blanches very well; hulls easily; resembles Jordan. Tree: upright, vigorous; bears early and heavily; blooms early, usually with or somewhat before Ne Plus Ultra; considerable resistance to mites (red spider) because of dense foliage; very susceptible to noninfectious bud failure; pollen compatible with Ne Plus Ultra, I.X.L., Nonpareil, and Peerless; incompatible with Harpareil.
