Cultivation

An attractive, very early-ripening apricot variety with high fruit quality intended for the fresh market. Origin: in New Brunswick, N.J., by L.F. Hough and K.H. Bailey, Rutgers Univ. RRl 7-62xNJA 13; cross made in 1971; selected in 1979; tested as NJA 53; patented as NJA 53 (USPP 9255); registered trademark name is EarlyBlush; introd. in 1995. Tree: vigorous, moderately spreading, productive, and bears regularly. Leaves: ovate, abruptly acuminate, obtuse at base, serrate margins; globose glands on petiole; moderate tolerance to bacterial leaf spot. 2 Fruit: medium-sized, globose, and slightly compressed; skin is light to medium orange with a red blush; flesh is orange and juicy; in New Jersey fruit ripens about 2 weeks before Harcot.
