Cultivation

Origin: in Excelsior, Minn., by the Univ. of Minnesota Fruit Breeding Farm. Named and introd. in 1925. (Prunus avium × P. pennsylvanica) × P. besseyi; seed planted in 1912; selected in 1916 or 1917; tested as Minn. 144. Tree: dwarf, bush-like, 8 ft tall; vigorous; productive; hardy; finely branched; leaves small. Fruit: small; round to round oval; stem short, slender; skin red, thin, medium tough; flesh greenish-yellow, medium firm, tender, juicy; sour-cherry flavor; quality fair; pit small, typically cherry­like, freestone; ripens in midseason, last half of August at St. Paul.
