Cultivation

Origin: in Fresno, Calif., by J.H. Weinberger, U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. Introd. in 1967. Mariposa × Laroda. Cross made in 1955; selected in 1960. Tree: vigorous; flowers are self-infertile, pollinizer is necessary; Santa Rosa, Redheart, and Redroy are effective pollinizers, blooming period overlapping with Frontier; recommended in Japanese plum growing areas. Fruit: larger than Santa Rosa; round-ovate; skin blueblack like Laroda, more attractive than other red-fleshed varieties; flesh red, not as dark as Mariposa, firm, separates readily from pit; flavor good, similar to Mariposa; ripens 10 to 14 days after Santa Rosa, less than a week earlier than Eldorado; ripens slowly on tree; softens slowly after picking.
