Cultivation

Origin: in Beltsville, Md., by H.W. Fogle, Agr. Res. Serv., U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. Introd. in 1977. Dixiland × Sentinel; cross made in 1962 by A. Leon Havis; tested as Beltsville 63221. Tree: average size and vigor; productive; leaf glands reniform; good bud hardiness; tolerant to bacterial spot (Xanthomonas pruni), moderately resistant to brown rot (Monolinia fructicola). Recommended for mid-Atlantic and northeastern states. Fruit: large, round; 80% to 90% bright red blush; short and sparce pubescence; yellow fleshed; redness at pit; freestone; moderately firm; ripens 5 days after Redskin. Flower: nonshowy and self-fertile.
