Cultivation

Origin: at Calhoun, La., by C.E. Johnson, W.A. Young, J.E. Boudreaux, W.J. Bourgeois, F.J. Peterson, and P.W. Wilson, Louisiana Agr. Expt. Sta. Introd. in 1990. Southern Glow o.p.3; selected in 1976; tested as L73-Al0-10. Tree: vigorous, productive; no bacterial spot has been observed on fruit and relatively little on leaves. Chilling requirement 500 to 600 h. Fruit: large, 70 mm; skin 90% red over medium yellow ground; flesh yellow, with some red near pit, firm, good texture, freestone; nearly round, with nonprominent suture. Ripens in late June at Calhoun, midway between Harvester and LaFeliciana. Flowers large, showy, selffertile. Leaf glands reniform.
