Origin: in Red Bluff, Calif., by Grant Merrill. Introd. in 1965. Plant patent 2601; 8 Feb. 1966. Gold Rush o.p.; selected at Red Bluff in 1958 and tested at Lamont and Exeter, Calif. Tree: vigorous; size medium to small, but large with controlled pruning, spreading; very productive; leaf glands reniform; leaves on short internodes; flower small, showy. Fruit: about size of J.H. Hale; cordate; apex tipped; skin bright to dark red over most of surface, tightly adherent; flesh firm, bright yellow, red near pit extending some into flesh, texture fine; pit large, freestone; ripens with Gold Rush.
