Origin: in Crawford, County, Ga., by John F. Duke, John F. Duke, Jr., and Leman P. Duke, Fort Valley, Ga. Introd. in 1964. Plant patent 2439; 25 Aug. 1964; assigned to Charles L. Shepard, Jr., Fort Valley, Ga. Coronet mutation; discovered in 1958; first fruited in 1960. Tree: productive; normally requires heavy thinning to make 2-inch fruit; chilling requirement 850 to 950 h. Fruit: resembles Coronet; average size 2 1/8 inches in diam.; 70% less fuzz than Coronet; skin yellow-gold with red flaking; ripens 16 days before Coronet; superior taste to Coronet, and does not deteriorate at maturity as early as Coronet; semi-freestone.
