Characteristics

A small tree ± 6 m. tall with straggling branches.. Twigs lenticellate.. Young shoots, petioles and stipules glabrous.. Petioles 1–7 cm. long, with a pair of small subulate stipels and/or a pair of sessile discoid glands at their apices; leaf-blades oblong, elliptic-oblong, elliptic or elliptic-oblanceolate, (17–)25–45(–55) cm. long, (8–)12–20(–26) cm. wide, shortly obtusely acuminate, rounded-cuneate, rounded, truncate or shallowly cordate, shallowly and rather remotely serrulate or denticulate to subentire, firmly chartaceous to thinly coriaceous, with a pair of sessile discoid glands above at the base, lateral nerves 16–25 pairs, the proximal camptodromous, the distal brochidodromous, fairly prominent above and beneath, tertiary nerves numerous and closely parallel, ± perpendicular to the laterals, quaternary nerves reticulate, glabrous above and beneath, dark green above, paler beneath.. Stipular sheath terminal, subulate, 2.5–5 cm. long, sharply acute, readily caducous.. Inflorescences axillary or sometimes cauliflorus, 2–3 or more per fascicle, not pedunculate, up to 7 cm. long but more commonly 1–3 cm. long; axis densely pubescent; bracts broadly ovate, 2–3 mm. long, rounded, pubescent at the base, otherwise glabrous, chestnut-brown; bracteoles resembling the bracts, but dorsally keeled and smaller.. Male flowers fragrant; pedicels 0.6–1.2 cm. long, pubescent below the articulation and otherwise glabrous or else entirely pubescent, reddish; calyx-lobes lanceolate, 3–5 mm. long, 1 mm. wide, acute, pubescent without at the apex, otherwise glabrous, becoming reflexed; petals elliptic-oblong to elliptic-obovate, 4–5 mm. long, 3–4 mm wide, ± rounded, glabrous, creamy or white; disc gland-mass glabrous or sparingly pubescent; stamens 42–55, filaments 3.5–5 mm. long, anthers 0.5 mm. long, white; pistillode (when present) tripartite, 2 mm. long, pubescent, usually 0.. Female flowers: pedicels 0.8–1.2 cm. long, evenly to densely pubescent; calyx-lobes ± as in the ♂ flowers; petals broadly ovate to suborbicular, 4–5 mm. long and wide, somewhat erose; disc evenly pubescent; staminodes ± 20, 1.5 mm. long; ovary depressed-subglobose, 2 mm. long, 3 mm. diameter, densely tomentose, pale green; styles 2 mm. long.. Fruit depressed trilobate-subglobose, 1.5–1.8 cm. long, 2–2.3 cm. diameter, densely tomentose with an admixture of longer hairs in the tomentum, dull reddish brown. Columella 7–9 mm. long.. Seeds transverse- ly ovoid-subglobose, 7–8 mm. long and deep, 8–10 mm. wide, smooth, slightly shiny, tawny or stramineous, mottled and streaked with chestnut or dark brown.. Fig. 30.
More
Leaf blades 15–30 × 6–11 cm, elliptic-oblong, very shortly obtusely acuminate at the apex, rounded or sometimes very shortly decurrent at the base, shallowly spinulose-denticulate on the margin, firmly chartaceous to thinly coriaceous, with a pair of sessile discoid glands on the upper surface at the base, drying reddish-brown beneath; lateral nerves in 16–25 pairs, the lower open, the upper looped, slightly prominent on leaf upper surface, prominent on leaf lower surface, tertiary nerves numerous and closely parallel, ± perpendicular to the lateral nerves, quaternary nerves reticulate.
Male flowers fragrant; pedicels 0.5–1 cm long, partly or entirely pubescent, reddish; calyx lobes 3–5 × 1 mm, lanceolate, acute, pubescent outside at the apex, otherwise glabrous, becoming reflexed; petals 4–5 × 3–4 mm, elliptic-oblong to elliptic-obovate, ± rounded, glabrous, creamy-white; disk gland-mass glabrous or sparingly pubescent; stamens 42–55, filaments 3.5–5 mm long, anthers 0.5 mm long, white; pistillode (when present) 2 mm long, tripartite, pubescent.
Inflorescences 1–3(7) cm long, axillary or sometimes borne on old wood, 2–3 or more per fascicle, not pedunculate; axis densely pubescent; bracts 2–3 mm long, broadly ovate, rounded, pubescent at the base, otherwise glabrous, chestnut-brown; bracteoles similar, but smaller and dorsally keeled.
