Characteristics

Trees. Leaves paripinnate. Flowers unisexual (plants monoecious). Calyx (4–)5-lobed almost to the base, lobes ovate or suborbicular. Petals (4–)5, free, slightly contorted, boat-shaped and spreading in open flower. Staminal tube urceolate, ending in (8–) 10 bifid, reflexed lobes, the anthers inserted between the deltate teeth of the lobes. Disk annular, surrounding the base of the ovary. Ovary 4–5-locular, each locule with 4–6 ovules; style-head discoid, upper surface with 4–5 radiating stigmatic ridges. Fruit an erect, narrowly clavifonn, woody, septifragal capsule, opening from the apex by 5 divergent valves which remain attached at the base and connected by a fibrous network; columella woody, extending to the apex of the capsule, sharply 4–5-angled, indented with the imprints of the seeds; seed-scars inconspicuous. Seeds winged, 4–5 per locule, attached by the seed-end to the distal part of the columella.
