Characteristics

Annual, erect herb, up to 750 mm high; stems single, simple or mostly branched in upper parts, narrowly winged by decurrent leaf bases. Leaves crowded and opposite on stems below, becoming alternate, smaller and spaced soon upwards; ob-or linear-lanceolate, acute, several-toothed above, teeth in pairs. Flowers small, single, bracteate, sessile or in spikes, these often grouped in lax corymbs, sometimes in narrow panicles. Bracts adnate to calyx tube. Calyx deeply 5-lobed. Corolla tubular, bilabiate; tube funnelshaped, 5-6 mm long; limb ± regular; 5 lobes spreading, white with orange mark at base of upper lip, there also bearded. Flowering time Feb., Mar. Fruit a pair of soft-walled cocci, convex on outer side.
