Pseudovanilla Garay

Genus

Angiosperms > Asparagales > Orchidaceae

Characteristics

Leafless climbing orchids with an extensive root system and tall, climbing stems bearing large, leaf-like bracts and supported by branched, clinging roots. Inflorescences are extended axillary panicles that lengthen as the flowers open. Buds develop to a certain stage and wait for an environmental stimulus to trigger a batch of flowers to open simultaneously. Flowers colourful, opening widely, with spreading, fleshy segments. Labellum fused with base of column to form a short spur. Labellum lamina unlobed or obscurely 3-lobed, distal margins crinkled, surface colourful and adorned with prominent, simple or branched papillae. Fruit long, slender capsules (unusual among orchids). Column slender.
