Characteristics

Decumbent gregarious perennial herb, ± 0.3 m., sparingly branched from about the middle.. Stem and branches terete, slender, densely furnished with crisped whitish hairs, somewhat thickened at the nodes.. Leaves ovate to elliptic, 3–7.5 × 1.8–3.5 cm., blunt to subacute at the mucronate apex, shortly cuneate at the base, with a 2–4 mm. petiole, subglabrous on both surfaces.. Inflorescences axillary, borne from near the base of the stem, of rather short spikes ± 1 cm. wide and finally elongating to ± 4 cm. long; axis densely whitish pilose; peduncles 3–8 mm.; bracts lanceolate, 2–3 mm., glabrous or almost so, sharply mucronate with the excurrent midrib, finally spreading; bracteoles broader, deltoid-ovate, 2–3 mm., greenish white to brownish, mucronate with the excurrent midrib, glabrous or sparingly ciliate.. Flowers sessile.. Tepals greenish white to brownish, lanceolate; outer 2 ± 5 mm., strongly 5-nerved, with the surface sulcate between the nerves, moderately furnished with patent fine white hairs; inner 2 slightly shorter, 3(–4)-nerved, very sparsely pilose or glabrous, broadly hyaline-margined; intermediate tepal similar with only one hyaline margin; midrib and lateral nerves confluent at the apex in an indistinct mucro.. Stamens short and delicate, ± 1.75 mm.; pseudostaminodes absent.. Ovary shortly pyriform, ± 1 mm... Style short, 0.5–1.5 mm.. Capsule ovoid, 3 mm.. Seed ovoid, 2.75 mm., brown, shining, faintly reticulate.
