Shrubs to 2 m tall, ultimately angular, smooth, glabrous, the nodes well spaced, usually 3.5-14.0 cm apart. Leaves oblong lanceolate or ovate lanceolate, (4.5-)8.0-14.0 cm long, 1.0-5.5 cm wide, acute or rarely tapering obtusely, with a vague, often falcate, rounded acumen, to 2 cm long, obtuse or cuneate at the base, often slightly inequilateral, the costa slender, prominulous or plane above, plane beneath, the lateral veins 6-9, with 1-4 irregular and soon branching smaller veins between a pair of lateral veins, the secondary veins pinnatiform, stiffly chartaceous, concolorous, drying green or occasionally brown, glabrous; petioles 0.5-1.0 cm long, glabrous, the lamina slightly decurrent adaxially; stipules con-nate, to 9 mm long, the sheath 1-2 mm long, truncate, the awns 2 per part, subulate, 2-7 mm long, acute, occasionally puberulent. Inflorescences terminal, solitary, glabrous or puberulent, often narrowly oblong, 8-15 cm long, 3-4(-8) cm wide, the peduncles 3-7 cm long, slender, occasionally flexuous, to 0.8 mm wide, the branches short, numerous, opposite or alternate, strict or arcuate, oc-casionally deflexed, the lowermost to 3 cm long, the branchlets few, often zig-zag. Flowers sessile or pedicellate; hypanthium 0.5 mm long, glabrous or puber-ulent, the calycine cup short, 0.15 mm long with several minute, appressed glands within, the lobes 5, triangular, 0.3 mm long; corolla white, the tube cylindrical, 3 mm long, expanded near the mouth, puberulent outside, villose within above the filament attachment, the lobes 5, oblong, 0.5 mm long, obtuse or acute; sta-mens 5, included or exserted, the anthers oblong, 0.7 mm long, the filaments slightly unequal, 1.5 mm long, attached in the upper 2/3 of the tube; ovarian disc annular, 0.25 mm wide, the styles of 2 lengths, 2.0-3.5 mm long, the stigmas oblong, 0.35-1.00 mm long. Fruits didymous, each pyrene rotund, to 3 mm in diam., drying green or black, the dorsal face somewhat costate, the ventral face of the endocarp with a groove.
