Characteristics

Leaves variable, 4–14 x 1.1–6.4 cm., narrowly oblong-elliptic to obovate but at least some near apex ± triangular, acute to obtuse at the apex, narrowly to broadly cuneate or ± subtruncate at the base, shortly pubescent, particularly on the veins beneath or sometimes more or less limited to those; bacterial nodules numerous of various shapes, spot-like, substellate or linear; petiole 0.2–2.5 cm. long, pubescent like the young stems; stipules ovate-triangular, the base c. 5 x 5 mm. with two narrow cusps 3–4 mm. long, grey-pubescent, the pair at the junction of new and old parts of stem darkening, thickening and accrescent to 1 cm. but often missing from other nodes on old stems, rusty pubescent.

Fruit scarlet, ± 5 mm. diam.; peduncles up to 4.5 cm. long; pedicels 5 mm. long; seeds c. 4 x 4 x 2.5 mm. with a ± Y-shaped fissure in the ventral-face but rest of albumen not ruminate and with no air-cavity.
Subshrub 9–25 cm. tall with few slightly branched shoots from a slender woody rhizome; youngest part of stem shortly velvety pubescent, older parts glabrous or grey to rusty-pubescent with dark ridged bark.
Inflorescences all terminal, many-flowered, congested, 1.5–2 x 1.5 cm., oblong or ovoid; peduncles 1–2.5 cm. long, grey-pubescent; pedicels 1–3 mm. long.
Corolla white; tube 1.5–2.5 mm. long, glabrous outside, white-hairy at the throat; lobes 2–2.5 x 1.5 mm., ovate to oblong.
Calyx tube about 1 mm. long, the limb reduced to a narrow truncate or undulate rim.
Style 4.5 mm. long in long-styled flowers, the stigmatic lobes scarcely 1 mm. long.
