Characteristics

Presumably a shrub; stem glabrous, longitudinally wrinkled and with fairly marked petiole-scars.. Leaf-blades lanceolate, 7–11 cm. long, 1.5–2.6 cm. wide, acute at the apex, cuneate at the base, glabrous above, drying minutely rugulose, glabrous beneath save for dense ferruginous hairs along the midrib when very young, probably ± coriaceous, said to be shining; a few nodules present along the side of the midrib which appear to break down into lesions; petioles thick, 0–8 mm. long; stipules with an ovate base 4 mm. long, bifid into 2 narrow acuminate lobes 4 mm. long.. Flowers heterostylous, 5-merous, in branched purplish brown panicles; peduncle 3.5–4.5 cm. long, ± glabrous; secondary branches 1.5–10 mm. long; bracts and bracteoles small, ferruginous hairy as are the articulations of the inflorescence.. Calyx purplish, with a few ferruginous hairs; tube campanulate, 1 mm. long; limb 0.8 mm. long; lobes triangular with rounded sinuses, 0.25 mm. long.. Corolla white; tube 5 mm. long, glabrous outside, hairy inside; lobes oblong-lanceolate, 4 mm. long, 1.6 mm. wide.. Stamens with filaments 4 mm. long in short-styled flowers, well exserted.. Style 3.2 mm. long in short-styled flowers, thickened upwards; stigma-lobes 1.5 mm. long.. Fruits not seen.
