Trees 4-8 m tall, the branchlets terete, smooth, glabrate, the nodes well spaced. Leaves elliptic, often narrowly so, often falcate, 7-18 cm long, 1.8-6.5 cm wide, deltoid, acute to vaguely obtuse at the apex, the acumen 1-2.5 cm long, attenuate, acute at the base, the costa prominulous above and beneath, the lateral veins (6-)9-12, arcuate ascending, stiffly chartaceous, concolorous, usually drying green or gray green, glabrous above, puberulent to glabrous beneath, the intervenal areas smooth, the petioles 1.5-3.5 cm long, 0.8-2.0 mm wide, glabrate, the stipules deciduous (fide Steyermark). Inflorescences terminal, shorter than the uppermost leaves, 4.0-7.5(-11.0) cm long in fruit; peduncle to 4 cm long with few branches, these well spaced, opposite or 4-radiate, each branch often bifur-cate. Flowers scarcely pedicellate, the hypanthium turbinate, glabrous, rubes-cent, the calycine cup short, patulous, the teeth evanescent, the corolla white, inflated cylindrical, to 3 mm long, glabrous outside, the lobes shorter than the tube, puberulent only at the base within, the stamens exserted. Fruits glabrous, 0.6-1.2 cm long, subrotund, oblong, compressed oblong or obovate, drying black or red, conspicuously obtusely ribbed, the calyx not persistent, the pedicels 0.8 cm long.
