Characteristics

Shrub 50–80 cm. tall; stem pubescent with red-brown hairs at the apex, glabrescent below save for the hairy nodes.. Leaf-blades lanceolate, oblanceolate or elliptic, 6.5–17 cm. long, 2.5–7.5 cm. wide, acute at the apex or shortly acuminate, narrowly cuneate at the base, glabrous above, ferruginous pubescent beneath when young but eventually only on the main nerves; petiole 0.7–3 cm. long, red pubescent.. Stipules oblong, ovate or elliptic, 0.9–1.2(–2) cm. long, mostly glabrous, margins glabrous or ciliate and with 2 basal divergent ferruginous-hairy ridges, divided into 2 broadly triangular or cuspidate lobes at the apex.. Inflorescences capitate, sessile or peduncle only 3 mm. long, up to 1.5 cm. broad, 20–35-flowered; bracts not joined to form an involucre, elliptic, 7 mm. long, 3 mm. wide, ± glabrous.. Calyx-tube narrow, 0.5–0.8 mm. long; tubular part of limb campanulate, 1.5 mm. long, glabrous or with a few sparse hairs; lobes narrowly triangular, 1 mm. long, glabrous, the margins inrolled.. Buds with 5 obtuse appendages 0.5 mm. long at the apex.. Corolla white; tube cylindric, 3.5 mm. long, funnel-shaped at the apex, glabrous; lobes oblong-elliptic, 1.5 mm. long, 0.8 mm. wide, strongly appendaged at the apex, produced laterally both backwards and forwards.. Tips of anthers just exserted in short-styled flowers.. Style 1 mm. long, mostly hidden in the large disc; stigmatic lobes flattened, ± 0.8 mm. long.. Drupes ellipsoid, 5.8–6 mm. long, 3.2–3.5 mm. wide, strongly ribbed, glabrous, crowned by the persistent reflexed calyx-lobes; pyrenes semi-ellipsoid, 5.5 mm. long, 2.5 mm. wide.
