Characteristics

Subshrub or shrub 1–6 m. tall; young stems densely covered with bright ferruginous hairs, the older stems glabrous.. Leaf-blades elliptic or ± obovate, 6–25 cm. long, 2–12 cm. wide, acuminate at the apex, cuneate to narrowly rounded at the base, glabrous and ± shining above, ferruginous pubescent on the midrib beneath and lateral nerves very finely puberulous; domatia and nodules absent; petiole 0.2–3 cm. long, ferruginous pubescent; stipules 0.7–2.5 cm. long, the base oblong, hairy at the middle, with 2 triangular lobes ± 0.2–1.2 cm. long, margins lacerate-ciliate, soon deciduous.. Flowers heterostylous, 5-merous, in panicles 3–4(–16) cm. long, the individual (1–)5–9 components capitate, 0.4–1.2 cm. in diameter; peduncles 3–10 cm. long; secondary peduncles 0.6–2.2 cm. long, all ferruginous pubescent; pedicels obsolete; main bracts hastate-lacerate, 4.5–5 mm. long, 4 mm. wide; capitula supported by a whorl of irregular free secondary bracts, 3–5 mm. long, ciliate.. Calyx-tube obconic, 1–1.5 mm. long, papillate; tubular part of the limb 1–1.5 mm. long; lobes irregular, low and broad to triangular, 0.3–0.7 mm. long, ciliate.. Buds finely papillate-puberulous, 5-lobed at the apex.. Corolla white, cream or greenish; tube cylindrical, 3.5–6 mm. long, shortly funnel-shaped above, glabrous below, papillate above; lobes oblong-elliptic, 1.7–2.5 mm. long, 1 mm. wide, thickened and appendaged at the apex, inflexed, papillate outside.. Anther tips just exserted in long-styled flowers; filaments 1.5–3.5 mm. long in short-styled flowers..
