Characteristics

Shrub or tree, or occasionally a scandent shrub, 2–7 m. tall; young branches glabrous or occasionally glabrescent, covered with grey bark when older.. Leaves not restricted to apices of branches; blades drying brownish or pale green, often folded, elliptic, 4.5–7.5 cm. long, 2.3–4.3 cm. wide, shortly acuminate to acuminate at apex, acute at base, coriaceous, shiny above, glabrous; lateral nerves in 3–4 main pairs; tertiary nerves mostly inconspicuous; domatia present as erupted or unerupted blisters shortly above the axils of the lateral nerves and frequently in the axils of the tertiary nerves; petioles 2–4 mm. long; stipules with a truncate to broadly triangular base, 1–2 mm. long and a keeled decurrent lobe 2.5–4 mm. long.. Flowers 4-merous, borne in 10–40-flowered pedunculate compact corymbose cymes 1.4–2.5 cm. across; peduncle 2–8 mm. long, adpressed pubescent; pedicels 2.5–6 mm. long, rather densely adpressed pubescent; bracteoles inconspicuous.. Calyx glabrous; tube ± 1 mm. long; limb shortly toothed, 0.5–0.75 mm. long, sparsely ciliate to ciliate.. Corolla whitish; tube 1.5–2.75 mm. long, pubescent at throat usually with some hairs deflexed but not forming a definite ring; lobes oblong, 1.75–2 mm. long, obtuse.. Anthers reflexed.. Style 5.75–6.5 mm. long; stigmatic knob 1 mm. long, ribbed.. Disk glabrous.. Fruit black when mature, broadly oblong in outline, 5–5.5 mm. long, 7–8 mm. wide, slightly indented to indented at apex; pyrene broadly ellipsoid, 4–5 mm. long, 3–3.5 mm. wide, 2.5 mm. thick, with ventral face flattened, crested at apex, rugulose.
