Characteristics

Scandent shrub or climber 1.5–7 m. tall, with short lateral branches at right-angles to the stem or somewhat backwardly curved, glabrous; young branches round to square, occasionally furrowed; bark fawn.. Leaf-blades elliptic to broadly elliptic or sometimes oblong-elliptic, 4–14 cm. long, 1.5–6.5 cm. wide, acute to acute-acuminate or sometimes abruptly acuminate at apex, rounded, obtuse or acute at base, coriaceous or sometimes subcoriaceous, moderately shiny to shiny above; lateral nerves (4–)5–8 main pairs, often impressed above, and with tertiary nerves completely obscure; domatia absent or present as unerupted or erupted blisters; petioles 5–9 mm. long; stipules with a truncate base and linear to narrowly oblong lobe perpendicular to stem, 4–7 mm. long.. Flowers 5-merous, borne in sessile to shortly pedunculate 2–15-flowered subumbellate cymes; peduncles 0–4 mm. long; pedicels 5–8 mm. long in flowering stage, glabrous; bracteoles glabrous.. Calyx-tube 1 mm. long, glabrous; limb reduced to a dentate rim, ciliate.. Corolla white or cream; tube 3.75–6 mm. long, with a ring of deflexed hairs below mid-point inside; lobes triangular-lanceolate, 3.5–6 mm. long, 1.25–2.5 mm. wide, with a tapering apiculum, 0.75–1.75 mm. long, at apex, sparsely pubescent towards base above.. Anthers ovate, less than 1/3 the length of the corolla-lobes, reflexed.. Style 7.5–10 mm. long; stigmatic knob cylindrical above, widening at base, 1–1.75 mm. long.. Disk glabrous.. Fruit greyish green, almost didymous, 7–7.5 mm. long, 1.4–1.5 cm. wide, often galled; pedicels accrescent; pyrene semicircular to almost circular in outline, 7 mm. in diameter, with shallow groove from point of attachment to centre, cartilaginous, scarcely bullate..
