Characteristics

Shrub or small tree 3–4 m. tall, or occasionally a liane up to 10 m. with spines on old stems (fide Mwasumbi 11629); young stems glabrous, older stems covered with greyish bark.. Leaves not restricted to apices of branches, very often ternate; blades elliptic or less often narrowly elliptic, 3.5–7.5 cm. long, 1.3–3.7 cm. wide, obtuse or acute at apex, acute at base, coriaceous, distinctly shiny above, glabrous; lateral nerves in 3–4 main pairs; tertiary nerves moderately coarsely reticulate, prominent on both faces; domatia present as small blisters with a pin-prick-like puncture; petioles 3–4 mm. long, glabrous; stipules ± 3 mm. long, with a shallow truncate base and linear lobe.. Flowers 5-merous, borne in subsessile 2–10-flowered subumbellate cymes; peduncles not exceeding 2 mm. long; pedicels 0.6– 1.6(–2.5 fide Bullock) cm. long, glabrous; bracteoles inconspicuous.. Calyx-tube 1.5 mm. long, glabrous; limb reduced to a toothed rim, ciliate.. Corolla greenish white; tube 3–4 mm. long, with a ring of deflexed hairs above mid-point inside; lobes oblong-lanceolate, 3 mm. long, 1.25–1.5 mm. wide, acute.. Anthers reflexed, ± oblong.. Style 7–8 mm. long; stigmatic knob 1.25 mm. long.. Disk glabrous.. Immature fruit 7 mm. long, 6 mm. wide; pedicels accrescent, up to 2.2 cm. long; mature pyrenes not known.
