Characteristics

Shrub 1.5–6 m. tall, with numerous perpendicular lateral spurs; very young stems pubescent, later covered with whitish grey bark.. Leaves mostly restricted to apices of lateral spurs; blades broadly elliptic to round, 0.8–2.8 cm. long, 0.5–2.3 cm. wide, rounded at apex, obtuse at base, coriaceous, slightly shiny above, glabrous, sometimes sparsely pubescent on the midrib beneath or occasionally sparsely pubescent beneath; lateral nerves in 3 main pairs; tertiary nerves coarsely reticulate, not very prominent; domatia present as small erupted blisters, glabrous; petioles 1.5–4 mm. long, pubescent; stipules with a shortly truncate base, 0.5–1 mm. long, bearing a linear lobe up to 2 mm. long, pubescent.. Flowers 4-merous, borne in subsessile to shortly pedunculate 5–20-flowered subumbellate cymes; peduncles up to 2.5 mm. long; pedicels 2–5 mm. long, sparsely pubescent to pubescent; bracteoles inconspicuous.. Calyx-tube ± 1 mm. long, glabrescent to sparsely pubescent; limb reduced to a repand rim, ciliate.. Corolla whitish or yellowish cream; tube 2.75 mm. long, with deflexed hairs above mid-point inside; lobes narrowly oblong, 4 mm. long, 1 mm. wide, obtuse.. Anthers linear-lanceolate, reflexed.. Style up to 6 mm. long; stigmatic knob 0.75 mm. long, slightly ribbed.. Disk glabrous.. Fruit black when mature, broadly oblong in outline, 6–6.5 mm. long, 9–10 mm. wide, scarcely indented at apex; pyrene almost semi-circular in outline, 6 mm. long, rugulose.
