Characteristics

A rigid shrub 0.3-0.6 m [as '1-2 ft.'] high. Branches glabrous; bark smooth when young, becoming rougher with age. Leaves opposite, oblong-oblanceolate or obovate-elliptic, acute or subacute, narrowed to and slightly connate at the base, 1-1.3 cm long, 0.5-1 cm broad, punctate on both surfaces with shortly setulose-ciliate margins. Heads terminal, solitary, obconic, about 3 cm long and 1.5 cm in diameter. Involucral bracts 5-6-seriate; the outer ones broadly ovate; the innermost oblanceolate, rounded or truncate at the apex, glabrous, with membranous and sometimes slightly jagged margins. Receptacle small. Corolla-tube l.3 cm long, cylindric, glabrous; lobes lanceolate, subacute, 3.5 mm long. Anthers 6 mm long, acute. Achenes 7 mm long, rather densely covered with subsessile golden glands and rarely with a few long hairs. Pappus bent near the base, 1.5 cm long, brownish when dry.

Capitula discoid, solitary at branch tips, large; involucral bracts in many rows, imbricate, broadly ovate to oblanceolate, apex obtuse or truncate, viscid, margins membranous and sometimes jagged, pinkish. Florets pinkish mauve, fragrant. Flowering time Aug.-Nov. Pappus of brownish or straw-coloured, subplumose, outer more slender than inner. Cypselae obovate, with thickened margins, densely glandular and sometimes a few long hairs.
