Characteristics

Annual herb up to c. 1 m tall; stems simple below and often ±lignescent, branching above; stems densely silky-hairy or pubescent. Leaves sessile, up to 7 x 1.5 cm, decreasing in size upwards and passing into the inflorescence bracts, narrowly oblong to oblong or oblanceolate, apex mucronate, base ±cordate-amplexicaul, margins entire or denticulate, silky-villous to pilose on both sides and minutely glandular. Inflorescence of terminal corymbs, 1-c. 15-capitulate; peduncles up to c. 5 cm long, densely pilose or villous and minutely glandular; bracts similar to the leaves but progressively smaller upwards. Involucres up to 1.5 cm in diam., depressed-globose; involucral bracts 2-3-seriate, c. 5 mm long, linear and tapering to a softly setaceous apex, densely hirsute and minutely glandular. Female ray-florets yellow, inconspicuous, 3 mm long, cylindric in the lower one-half; ligule narrowly oblong, 3-dentate at the apex. Hermaphrodite disk-florets yellow, c. 3 mm long, very narrowly funnel-shaped, lobes very short minutely glandular outside. Cypsela c. 0.8 mm long, ±cylindric, 4-sided with 4 setulose ribs; pappus with an outer series of minute scales and an inner series of minutely barbellate setae c. 2 mm long.
