Cultivation

A long-storing red sport of Anjou. Origin: near Hood River, Ore., in 1976 by Eugene C. Euwer. Plant patent 6194; issued 7 June 1988 to Eugene C. Euwer. Discovered as a sport in the top of a 60-year-old Beurre d' Anjou tree. Tree: size, shape, and growth characteristics same as parent; leaves, bark, and flower petals darker than parent Anjou. Fruit: similar to standard Anjou except skin is overall bright red; lower rate of respiration and ethylene production result in longer storage and shelf life than standard Anjou; higher titratable acids and soluble solids than standard Anjou and Gebhard Red Anjou.
