Characteristics

Small trees to 5 m tall, the branches lignose, glabrous, the nodes well spaced. Leaves conspicuously anisophyllous, elliptic, oblong or obovate oblong, 8-23 cm long, 3-7 cm wide, the smaller leaves often ovate, 1-4 cm long, acute, deltoid or occasionally rounded at the apex, acuminate, the acumen to 1.5 cm long, acute toward the base, the costa prominulous above and beneath, the lateral veins 9-12, arcuate, immersed, the undulate submarginal vein not visible or inconspic-uous, coriaceous, scarcely discolorous, brown when dry, glabrous. Inflores-cences axillary, the peduncle much reduced, to 0.5 cm long, the flowers solitary, the bracts crowded, imbricate, resembling the stipules. Flowers subsessile, the pedicels to 3 mm long; hypanthium oblong, ca. 4 mm long, glabrous except for numerous minute red glands, the calycine cup elongate cupuliform, ca. 5 mm long, turgid, truncate, glabrous with numerous minute red glands outside and similar to those of the hypanthium, to 0.6 mm wide, carnose but marginally thin, the teeth 5, subulate, slightly unequal, 2.5-3.3 mm long; corolla white, the tube narrowly cylindrical, ca. 2 cm long, glabrous, thickly carnose, the lobes 5, strong-ly imbricate, ovate elliptic or oblong, at first concave, ca. 2 cm long, acute, glabrous; stamens 5, the anthers sessile, oblong, ca. 7.5 mm long, acuminate at the apex, the acumen to 0.5 mm long, affixed near the middle of the tube; ovarian disc compressed cushion shaped, to 1 mm long, ca. 1.5 mm wide, the style ca. 12 mm long, ca. 3 mm wide; ovary unilocular, provided with 2 T-shaped parietal placentas closely appressed to the wall. Fruit oblong rotund, to 3.5 cm long, to 3 cm wide, glabrous, delicately ribbed, the persistent calyx ca. 0.35 cm long.
