Perennial herb, usually acaulescent, and with much elongated somewhat thickened roots.. Leaves about 5–12, forming a rosette, pinnate with 2–4 pairs of leaflets and an odd terminal one; leaflets more or less elliptic or broadly elliptic in general outline, the lateral ones mostly with 1 or 2 coarse teeth or lobes on each margin, the terminal with several lobes or teeth, apex and teeth acute to subacute, pilose to nearly or quite glabrous; rhachis and petiole more or less pilose.. Flowers arising singly from among the basal leaves, rarely from elongated stems; pedicels 0.5–10 cm. long, adpressed pilose.. Sepals spreading, glabrous to slightly hairy.. Petals generally 5, 1.0–2.5 cm. long, 2.5–5 mm. broad, yellow.. Achenes in spherical heads which by curvature of the pedicels become buried in the soil (geocarpic), with no thickened margin and smooth rounded sides; persistent beak up to 1.5 mm. long, slender, more or less straight..
