Characteristics

Perennial herb with erect stems, and thickened more or less elongated and tuberous roots.. Stems 2–6 dm. tall, loosely pilose, branched.. Basal leaves with blades obovate, suborbicular, or oblate in outline, 3–5 palmatisect or palmatilobed, with few, mostly coarse teeth which, with the apices of the segments or lobes, are acute, subacute, or apiculate, broadly cuneate to slightly cordate, up to 5 cm. long and 5.5 cm. broad, adpressed pilose when young, later glabrescent; petiole up to 13 cm. long.. Sepals spreading, pilose on outer surface, caducous.. Petals generally 5, yellow, 8–10 mm. long.. Achenes in a spherical head, persistent beak straight or slightly curved, margin bordered, sides flat, smooth.. Fig. 4/4.
