Characteristics

Plants mat-forming, 150-450 mm high; stolons present. Culms branching, axils of branches glabrous; round (not compressed), solid or with a small central cavity; smooth or punctate. Leaf sheaths > 1 per culm, persistent, closely convolute. Male inflorescences with 2-20 spikelets; spathes persistent, like floral bracts or shorter than spikelets, coriaceous. Female inflorescences (1)2-5 spikelets; spathes shorter than spikelets, persistent; spikelets 10-18 mm long; bracts taller than flowers, awn < 1/2 length of bract body. Ovary bilocular; styles 2, plumose, bases free. Fruit a dehiscent capsule; seeds brown.
