Characteristics

Plants clumped or tufted, 0.2-0.5 m high; spreading rhizomes, stolons present or absent. Culms branching, roughly warty, often white-dotted, with clusters of sterile branches at base of plants. Leaf sheaths closely or loosely convolute, large hyaline shoulders present; membranous margins continuing behind straight and erect awn, decaying to give a lacerated appearance. Male inflorescences with 2-50 spikelets. Female inflorescences with 1-20 spikelets; spathes shorter than spikelets, persistent, coriaceous. Spikelets sessile, oblong, rounded or obtuse, 7-20 mm long. Ovary unilocular; styles 3, plumose, white, bases free. Flowering time Feb.-Apr. Fruit a dehiscent capsule.
