Characteristics

Evergreen glabrous liane or scandent shrub 2–10 m high. Leaves concolorous, penniveined; lamina ovate to elliptic, (20–) 50–110 (–130) mm long, (14–) 25–40 (–50) mm wide, base cuneate or obtuse, margin denticulate (rarely entire), apex bluntly acuminate; petiole (4–) 6–10 (–12) mm long; stipules broadly triangular, attenuate, 0.8–2.2 mm long, persistent. Inflorescence comprising axillary, few-flowered contracted cymes. Flowers green; pedicels 4–11 mm long. Hypanthium 2.2–3 mm diam. Sepals 1.5–2.2 mm long, caducous. Petals 1.3–1.6 mm long, longitudinally rolled around the stamens. Stamens 1.4–2 mm long. Disc filling the hypanthium tube. Ovary superior to semi-inferior; carpels 2. Style 0.4–1 mm long. Fruit reddish at first, becoming black when ripe, 6–10 mm long; pyrene generally 1-seeded; torus basal, disc-shaped.
