Characteristics

Plants tufted, 2-3 m high. Culms unbranched, smooth or finely rugulose; clusters of sterile branches at nodes of fertile branches. Leaf sheaths closely convolute, apical margins broadly chartaceous and soon decaying. Male and female inflorescences: many on branchlets on terminal nodes. Male spikelets pendulous on flexible pedicels. Female spikelet 5-7 mm long, 1-flowered and with 3-6 sterile bracts. Ovary trilocular; styles 3, white, plumose, free. Flowering time June, July. Fruit a capsule.
