Characteristics

Stout palm to 10 (–15) m high or more. Crownshaft stout, bulging, prominent, 50–60 cm long. Leaves 3–4 m long; petiole ± erect, stout, c. 20 cm long; lamina spreading. Inflorescence 30–50 cm long with 50–60 fairly stout branches, creamy white at first, turning green in fruit. Male flowers very pale mauve; sepals very narrow, 2–4 mm long; petals ovate, 5–6 mm long, acuminate, valvate. Female flowers cream; sepals 3–4 mm long, imbricate; petals 5–6 mm long, imbricate. Fruit globular-ovoid, 12–15 mm long, red.

Usage

Early settlers and convicts ate the palm shoots (see Coyne 2011: 94–96). Cultivated as an ornamental. Rhopalostylis baueri is featured on a 10c stamp in the 2004 Norfolk Island Palm & Fern local booklet stamps set of two. It also appeared on a Norfolk Island 5c postage stamp issued 1983.
