Characteristics

Autoecious; plant slender, prostrate, rooting, dark green or yellowish green; stems 1-1 1/2 inch long, irregularly pinnate; pinnae ½ inch long, simple, crowded, with leaves all round; leaves only subcomplanate, ovate-acuminate, acute, not cordate, 1 1/2-2 mm long, or the stem-leaves rather longer with long subulate points; leaves not furrowed, concave, decurrent, denticulate-serrulate; margins often narrowly reflexed at the base, expanded elsewhere; toothed by protruding cell-ends from the base upward, but mostly upward, the lower teeth often obscured by the reflexed margin; nerve weak, extending to or near mid-leaf; cells linear, 100 µm long, quickly reduced at the leaf-base to many small quadrate or oblong cells extending across the leaf, of which the lower row are the larger, the alar cells not different from these and hardly sunk; per. leaves sheathing, short, quickly narrowed to a long, spreading or reflexed subula, nerveless. Seta 1-2 c. long, smooth, red; capsule oblong, horizontal, arched, with wide ring and long-beaked lid. Peristome teeth red, inner teeth perforated with two cilia between (much appendiculate, C. M.). Variable as to the length of the leaves and of the subula points, branch leaves often smaller than those of the main stem, more distinctly toothed and less regularly nerved.
