Characteristics

Habit: inconspicuous, rhizomatous shrub, procumbent to 50 cm; aerial shoots less than 10 cm high; subterranean shoots extensive. Newer aerial stems densely clothed in leaves, mat like, adaxial surface uppermost. Leaves obovate to angular-obovate, almost rhombic, 6–8 mm long, 2 mm wide; margins usually entire; apices acute with prominently hooked in-curving mucro. Inflorescences solitary or paired flowers; pedicels 4–7 mm. Sepals 2 mm long, acuminate, apex almost aristate; petal length 4–5 mm. Stamens with filaments noticeably wider in the centre, tapering apically; pollen yellow. Pistil not obviously stipitate; ovary green, not flattened. Fruit dehiscent, purse-shaped capsules, 3.5–4 mm long, 3–4 mm diam., green, eventually fawn, chartaceous, margins flattened when immature. Seeds 2–5  per loculus, angular-reniform, 2 mm long, 1 mm wide brown dusted with gold, very wrinkled. Flowering  in early summer in Victoria, about 6 weeks earlier in New South Wales
