Characteristics

Habit: rhizomatous, prostrate shrubs, less than 10 cm high, aerial shoots unbranched, forming a mat of circumference at least 50 cm; new stems ‘cobwebby’ with uniseriate hairs. Seedling leaves 3– 4 x 1 mm; shape and arrangement similar to adult leaves; adult leaves alternate, 2-ranked, angular-elliptic, 10–12 mm long, 3 mm wide, adaxial face uppermost; margins slightly recurved; apices tri-lobed with mid lobe largest, eventually acute; very shortly petiolate. Inflorescences are umbels with up to six bisexual flowers; basal involucre present in addition to one filiform bract to 6 mm long; pedicels distinctive 12–15 mm long, nodding. Sepals 2–3.5 mm long, spreading from base, narrowly triangular, margins densely hairy with paired hairs, green tinged mauve. Petals 4–5 mm long, spreading from base, inner surface white, outer surface pale mauve. Stamens: filaments flared in the middle, abruptly narrowing in top third;  anthers triangular with rounded apices. Pistil with a stipe 1 mm long, ovary slightly compressed, bilocular, several ovules per loculus; style eventually to 2 mm; stigma minute.Fruits are dehiscent capsules, purse shaped, 4 mm long, 2 x 2 mm diam.; emarginate; green-purple, eventually fawn? Seeds 1–3 per loculus, distinctively globose, green-purple when fresh; surface raised, warty. Flowering December to February.
