Characteristics

Large shrub or tree to 5(–12) m, the twigs and peduncles viscid with numerous large, sessile or subsessile glands; stipules usually setaceous; lfls 13–25, lance-ovate to oval; fls crowded in short suberect racemes, pink with a yellow spot on the standard, 2.5 cm; cal finely hairy, the upper lip cleft into 2 sharp triangular lobes shorter than the body of the lip; fr hispid with stipitate-glandular hairs; 2n=20. Native in mt. woods from Pa. to Ala., but found along roadsides as an escape from cult. nearly throughout our range. June. Ours is var. viscosa.
