Branches slender, 4-angled or the old ones terete, smooth or striate, lenticellate, usually not swollen at the nodes, subglabrous or sparsely to ± densely hairy, brownish to deep brown, usually persistently leafy, sometimes with axillary fascicles of leaves.
Cymes 1–few-flowered, arranged in loose terminal panicles up to 9 cm long, the panicle not usually distinct, the uppermost pair of normal leaves sometimes subtending the 2 basal cymes; peduncles 4–5 cm long, not densely appressed or spreading hairy.
Calyx 5–7 mm long, campanulate, usually sparsely appressed hairy, rose-purple; lobes 2–3 mm long, oblong or oblong-semicircular, at least some lobes reflexed or spreading, pale pink.
Corolla usually with the four lateral lobes white or pale blue or sometimes green, and the median lobe blue, mauve-purple or purple; corolla tube c. 10 mm long.
A weak-stemmed shrub up to 3 m tall, or a slender tree 3–4 m tall, sometimes an under-shrub 0.65–1 m tall, profusely branched.
Anthers c. 1.5 mm long.
