Characteristics

Leaves opposite, distinctly petiolate; lamina 4.5–14 × 2–9 cm, usually less than twice as long as wide or nearly as long as wide, broadly ovate, broadly elliptic to subcircular or subrhombic, cuneate or rounded at the base, short to long-acuminate at the apex, distinctly dentate-mucronate to subentire or entire, membranous, somewhat discolorous, drying nearly black on the upper surface, usually with sparse slender ± appressed hairs on the nerves beneath, the finer reticulation darker and very conspicuous beneath; petiole (0.5)1–2(2.7) cm long, slender; the leaves subtending the lowermost cymes (the lowermost foliaceous bracts) up to 5 × 4 cm, rounded, obtuse or acuminate at the apex, with petioles short or nearly absent.

Corolla bright blue throughout or with the median lobe dark blue or blue-purple; or corolla pale mauve with the median lobe violet or dark blue, or white and blue; tube 6.5–8.5 mm long and c. 4 mm in diameter; lateral lobes 9 × 4–5 mm, median lobe c. 13 mm long, all ciliate; corolla limb spherical when in bud, glabrous.
Calyx 3–5(6) mm long and 3–5 mm in diameter at the apex of the lobes, subturbinate, usually glabrous, rarely with some hairs at the base; calyx lobes 1–1.5(2.5) mm long, shorter than the tube or nearly absent, triangular or shortly triangular-oblong, subacute or rarely rounded.
Cymes 1–5-flowered, arranged in (4)5–8 opposite pairs in a loose terminal panicle up to 25 cm long, indumentum similar to that of the leaves; peduncles divaricate or erect-patent, very slender, the lowermost 4.5–8.5 cm long; pedicels of the dichotomies up to 8 mm long.
A spreading or bushy shrub 2–6 m tall, or sometimes a slender tree up to c. 9.6 m tall; old branches with a brown or grey rough bark, glabrous; young branches appressed hairy.
Fruit 8–10 mm long, coppery-red (immature?).
Anthers c. 1.25–1.75 mm long.
