Perennial herb, climber or scrambler. Stems up to 3 m long. Leaves in whorls of 6-8(-12), petiolate; blade length/width ratio > 3:1; blade narrowly ovate to linear, up to 70 x 10 mm, base cuneate, only midvein prominent. Flowers: several to many per inflorescence; corolla mostly 5-merous, 3.0-5.9 mm in diameter, greenish, yellowish green to yellow; Nov.-Apr. Fruit with mericarps up to 3.7 mm in diameter, fleshy, blackish or dark purple, glabrous.
Leaves in whorls of 6–8(12), blades 10–50(70) x 2–8(10) mm., lanceolate, linear-lanceolate to linear, mostly narrowed to base, blades occasionally difficult to distinguish from faintly winged petioles, acute at apex, only midvein prominent; margins and midvein below with recurved prickles, seldom scabrid above; petioles 10–25(40) mm. long, ± 3-angular in section or somewhat canaliculate, mostly with (2 rows of) recurved prickles.

Stems to c. 2–3 m. long, distinctly 4-ribbed, with recurved prickles on ribs, younger parts often with short hairs below nodes, occasionally also with some short whitish hairs between ribs.
Inflorescence several-to many-flowered, rather lax to ± dense; peduncles and pedicels 1–6 mm. long, glabrous or sometimes hairy; ultimate bracts c. 2–5 mm. long, linear.
Flowers 5 (very rarely 4 or 6)-merous; corolla 3–6 mm. in diam.; filaments to 0.6 mm., anthers to 0.5 mm. long; ovary c. 0.4–0.8 mm. long.
Fruit blackish or dark purple, each mericarp 2.5–3.5 mm. in diam.
