Characteristics

Perennial herb with trailing, ± looping, often rooting stems from a woody rootstock, sometimes producing erect stems from old prostrate ones or from centre of rootstock, basal part of stems sometimes woody with age; stems up to 60 cm long, hispid-pubescent or sparsely so when young, with broad glossy hairs. Leaves often congested on dwarf-shoots, hispid-pubescent or sparsely so, with broad glossy hairs, mainly on midrib and edges; lamina linear-lanceolate to narrowly elliptic or narrowly obovate, largest 3-6 x 0.2-0.5 (0.7) cm; apex subacute to rounded; base decurrent to stem or almost so. Flowers congested on dwarf-shoots, solitary in axils of leaf-like bracts; pedicels to 1 mm long; bracteoles leafy, to 3 cm long. Calyx hispid-pubescent or sparsely so on veins and edges, otherwise glabrous, fused for 3-7 mm at base; lobes acute to acuminate, dorsal 19-27 mm long, ventral and lateral 14-21 mm long. Corolla bright blue to mauve, no markings, (18) 28-35 mm long of which cylindric tube is 5-12 mm, throat (9)12-15 mm, and circular to transversally elliptic lobes (4) 7-9 x (4) 7-11 mm. Free part of filaments glabrous, fused for 1-2 mm at base, short pair 3-5 mm, long pair 6-9 mm long; anthers 2-3 mm long, spurs 0.25-0.5 mm long. Stigma c.1 mm long. Capsule 9-13 mm long, brown. Seeds c.3 x 2 mm.
