Characteristics

Robust, perennial herb, up to 0.6 m high; stems greenish. Leaves with stout petioles, lanceolate, up to 250 x 50 mm, base attenuate, apex acute; upper cauline leaves few, smaller. Inflorescences amply branched. Flowers in many-flowered whorls, not subtended by a leaf; with inner perianth segments toothed. Flowering time Oct.? Fruiting pedicels stout, articulated below middle, often arcuate, as long as or longer than valves. Fruiting valves leathery, narrowly or broadly cordate, apex ligulate or acute, reticulation subfoveolate, margins grossly dentate; callosity yellowish brown, basal on main vein of each valve, ovoid, > 1/2 as long as wings, sculpturing reticulate, apex long attenuate. Fruit a brown nut, up to 2.5 mm long.

Outer perianth segments greenish-brown, 2 mm long, oblong-lanceolate; inner perianth segments reddish-brown, 3–4 × 2–2.5 mm, ± triangular, obtuse or acute at the apex, cuneate to rounded or more rarely subtruncate at the base, ± denticulate on the margin, with short irregular teeth below the middle, with ± well developed dorsal tubercles near the base.
