Characteristics

Perennial herb, 0.6-1.2 m high; stems stout. Leaves with lamina lanceolate to oblong, up to 90 x 30 mm, base rounded to cuneate, apex acute; upper cauline leaves fewer, smaller; petioles stout, up to 25 mm long. Inflorescences: branches basally as thick as stems, stiff or arcuate. Flowers in distant whorls, basally ± 8-flowered, subtended by single leaves, few-flowered and leafless towards ends of axes. Flowering time Nov.-Apr. Fruiting pedicels thin, articulated below middle, gradually thickening towards base of outer perianth. Fruiting valves leathery, ovate-cordate, ± 5 mm long, venation reticulate-foveolate, margins grossly dentate, apex broadly acuminate, teeth up to 6 on each side, apex flexuose, hooked or coiled. Fruit a dark brown nut, 3.5 mm long.
