Perennial herb, up to 0.7 m high. Stems erect, usually solitary. Leaves sessile; blade narrowly ovate, decurrent, base without lobes, apex acute to acuminate. Ocrea brown, membranous, usually caducous. Flowers: perianth green with deep red to purple edges; Oct.-Feb. Fruit with valves suborbicular, coppery red, longer than nut, without well-developed callosity.
A shrub. It has a tuberous root. The stem is stout and erect. It grows 1 m high. The stem is 1 cm across. There are only a few leaves. The leaf blades are 15 cm long by 4 cm wide. They taper to both ends. The flowering shoots are at the top of the plant.
