Erect, annual herb, 0.3-0.7 m high; rhizomes fibrous with swollen, fusiform tubers; basal internodes short. Leaves coriaceous; lower leaves with petioles dilated, lamina up to 100 x 40 mm, apex acute; cauline leaves shorter, ovate, with long attenuate apex. Inflorescences leafless. Flowers in few-flowered whorls. Flowering time Oct.-Apr. Fruiting pedicels filiform, arcuate, articulate below middle. Fruiting valves widely cordate, up to 10 x 12 mm, brownish, flushed with purple. Fruit a dull brown nut, 5 mm long.
