Much-branched shrub or small tree 1.5–3.6 m. tall, entirely glabrous (save for domatia and insides of stipules) or with young shoots slightly to densely adpressed pubescent; older branches greyish, ± nodulose and verrucose, the bark often red-brown and fissured and flaky.. Leaf-blades elliptic to broadly ovate-elliptic, 1.3–6 cm. long, 0.4–2.8 cm. wide but usually quite small in Flora area, abruptly shortly obtusely acuminate at the apex, ± rounded or cuneate at the base, scarcely discolorous, glabrous save for small pubescent domatia which may be almost or quite absent or, rarely, in Malawi, pubescent beneath and on midrib above; petioles 3–4 mm. long; stipules connate at the base, glabrous outside, densely long-villous inside, 2 mm. long, abruptly subulate-cuspidate, the appendage 1–2 mm. long.. Flowers solitary or in lax 2–4-flowered cymes; pedicels rather thick, 3–5(–11) mm. long.. Buds ± rounded to acuminate at the apex.. Calyx-tube 1.5 mm. long; limb obsoletely dentate, truncate or teeth broadly triangular, 0.8 mm. long.. Corolla creamy white; tube obconic, dilated from the base, 5–6 mm. long 3.5–5 mm. wide, with a ring of deflexed long hairs inside from the top of the tube; lobes oblong, reflexed, reaching about the middle of the tube, ovate, ± 3–3.5 mm. long, 2–2.5 mm. wide, obtuse or with short appendage to 0.5 mm. long.. Ovary 3–4-locular; stigmatic club coroniform, 1 mm. wide, 3–4-lobed.. Fruit purple-black, ± 8 mm. long.
